This week, I’m doing the Naughty List writing tag from Jenna Moreci
1) Provide a brief description of your novel before beginning. NO MORE THAN 5 SENTENCES.
2) If your cast is fewer than 15 characters, you can’t use the same name more than twice. If your cast is larger than 15 characters, you can’t use the same name more than once.
My Work in Progress (WIP) is about a 13-year-old girl named Penelope who uncovers a long-kept family secret while staying with her grandparents in 1942. She’s a Trinketeer, a descendent of a line of magical toymakers from the land of Mystique, where toys live like humans. Her father isn’t really missing, and her grandfather isn’t really stranded in war-torn London searching for him. Instead, they’ve both been captured by The Master, who is using them as bait to harness Penelope’s powers and awaken his coma-stricken love, the legendary Destructeaur.
#1 Which character is SO into the holidays, they nearly cause a street-wide power outage from all their Christmas lights? That would be Eleonore, Penelope’s over-protective, prim and proper Grandmére. Strict as she may be, she’s also the toast of every party and never misses a chance to show it off.
#2 Which character attends the office New Year’s party with ONE date…and goes home with someone else? None of my main characters are quite that promiscuous, but if I had to pick one, it would be Kalile. I can’t say who she is, but she and one of the other characters have a… mysterious past. She has a good heart, but now that she’s out on her own and no longer has to worry about surviving on the streets, she enjoys exploring her wild side.
#3 Which character is more than happy to steal Hanukkah gelt from poor, unsuspecting children? [Note: Hanukkah gelt = chocolate coins] Harrison may look like an innocent stuffed elephant, but like he says, toys have lives too! Part of his happens to be a bit of a gambling problem. He’d use the coins as betting chips.
#4 Fill in the blanks: I saw ____[character]____ doing a whole lot more than ____[verb]____-ing Santa Claus. They were full on ____[action]____. I saw Amelia doing a whole lot more than talking to Santa Claus. They were full on arguing. Amelia is Penelope’s mentor as she gears up to kick The Master’s butt, and as much as she is devoted to saving Fanchon, Penelope’s grandfather, as he is a second father to her, she is quite the cynic. If she ever meets a real-life Santa, she’d be that investigative kid looking for any proof he was/wasn’t real.
#5 One of your characters decides to pregame before church and passes out in the middle of the Christmas service. Which character is it? Hmm… I’m gonna go with Xavier for this, Again, he is very brave and cunning, which makes him a great fit for the head of The Master’s royal guard, but if he’s not careful, his arrogance could be his worst enemy. I could totally see him being the guy who thinks he’ll be perfectly fine and then just zonking in the middle of the hymns.
#6 Which character hasn’t been seen since winter began because they refuse to deal with the snow? I feel like Adrian, Penelope’s father, would HATE the snow. He’s a pilot in the Royal Air Force, and crappy weather just makes evading the enemy that much harder.
#7 Which character completely forgot about the holidays and ends up re-gifting to everyone? This one goes to Elias, Penelope’s best friend Hazeema’s twin brother. He’s VERY devoted to his future career in music and so all of his time would be spent prepping for a Christmas Eve concert and he’d only remember gifts at like 4 a.m. on Christmas morning.
#8 Which character has such crappy luck, they only discover their potato allergy after pigging out on latkes? Definitely Victoria. Another character shrouded in mystery, her whole life has been a massive case of bad luck. A food allergy, even one severe enough to send her to the hospital, would be just a typical day.
#9 The Krampus has arrived to punish your very bad characters. Which character is kinda into it? I think the Master would pretend to be into it (because he probably summoned it to try and manipulate the others into giving him what he wants,) but secretly he’d be plotting ways to defend himself when it turned on him.
#10 One of your characters should be on the naughty list, but has convinced Santa to clear their name. Which character is it, and what was their means of persuasion? Without question, Hazeema, Penelope’s best friend. She’s forever up for an adventure, but it almost always ends up getting her in trouble. She’s a writer and has a way with words, probably from so much practice weaseling her way out of punishment.
Penelope could also be on the naughty list. Knowing her, she would climb up onto the roof to see how the sleigh worked and end up releasing all of the reindeer from their harnesses. She’s such a klutz, but so enthusiastic and caring with everything she does. Luckily, she’s also a great inventor. She’d probably rewire Santa’s sleigh to make it rocket-powered and then climb in to go in search of the reindeer.
